Environment and Business BA
Overview
Our BA Environment and Business course combines the study of environmental and sustainability issues with sound business and management practice. It’s concerned with the pressures and opportunities facing business as a result of the contemporary environmental and corporate social responsibility agendas.
If you want to develop skills in the use of concepts, methods and tools that can be used to transform economic, environmental and social pressures into positive business opportunities, this course could be for you. Your background could be in business, geography or other social sciences.
You’ll have the opportunity to study modules in the Business School and the School of Law, and to undertake a major dissertation project. Your module choices will allow you to develop specialist knowledge and skills, which can help you succeed in the employment market.
You'll be taught by leading specialists from across the breadth of our environment and business research disciplines.
Extending this degree
You can convert your 3-year degree into a 4-year degree by spending an additional year on an industrial placement or overseas, before returning to Leeds to complete your final year of study.
We also offer an Integrated Masters (combining bachelor and Masters level study), where you spend a year studying abroad at a partner university and return to Leeds to study Masters-level modules in your final year.
Course content
The course is designed around a combination of compulsory core modules, as well as opportunities to choose optional modules that allow you to follow areas of personal interest or broaden your learning.
In your first year, you’ll study the underlying principles of business, the natural environment, and human impacts. Fieldwork and study skills feature strongly in this course and provide a solid foundation for your later independent studies.
In year 2, you’ll develop your business skills through a range of core and optional modules influenced by your own interests. In this year you will have interaction with business executives and will work on real world issues in environment and business.
As you extend your analytical skills you will gain a deeper understanding of the issues regarding the interface between the environment and business practices.
Your final year will give you the chance to produce your own work at a professional level through our own final year project. You will be able to choose modules that enable you to pursue your specialist interests. These may include: climate change, law, marketing and advertising, business management, or corporate strategy.

Learning and teaching

You can expect to study in a variety of settings, from large lecture theatres to computer clusters, seminar rooms, tutorials, laboratories, visualisation suites and out in the field. Our state-of-the-art building is in the centre of the campus and provides an ideal working environment, and offers quiet study and coffee areas when you are not in class.
We offer research-led teaching across the breadth of our environment and business disciplines, from specialists in their field. As Leeds is a research-intensive Russell Group University, you’ll be studying amongst staff who are at the cutting edge of research world-wide, and who will incorporate this expertise into their teaching.
On this course you’ll be taught by our expert academics, from lecturers through to professors. You may also be taught by industry professionals with years of experience, as well as trained postgraduate researchers, connecting you to some of the brightest minds on campus.

Field classes give students an excellent opportunity to engage with current debates, investigate real world examples and interact with different interest groups in locations around Yorkshire and further afield.
In your first year, you will research a sustainability problem and apply your new research skills to a real world situation. Optional modules include one-day field classes where you will develop skills in data collection and analysis. Second-year fieldwork in research methods involves an overseas residential field class, where you can apply different research approaches and data collection methods to prepare you for your individual research project in your final year. Some optional modules include one-day field visits where you can gain insights from practitioners about particular environmental issues.
Because we recognise the value of field experience the school covers the transport and accommodation costs for all compulsory taught field classes and many optional field trips.
