Profile

Paul has a broad academic background in sustainable and low carbon regional development, ranging from working with smallholders in rural Borneo to develop sustainable palm oil supply chains, through, to developing circular business models for farming cooperatives in Italy and Catalonia and leading impact assessment and cost-benefit analyses of national infrastructure projects in the UK’s Humber region. Originally an electronics engineer, he specialises in agroecology, industrial ecology and renewables, and has expertise in stakeholder engagement and the use of Geographic Information Systems to assist strategic regional resource efficiency planning. Currently Paul is working with Professor Caroline Orfila to map and assess the productivity, equitability and resilience of the Leeds City Region food system in respect of its long term sustainability and relationship to local health outcomes. Previous to joining the School of Food Science and Nutrition, Paul held research positions at the University of Surrey’s Centre for Environmental Strategy, at the University of Hull and in the Logistics and Humber Development Institute where he was the Environment and Sustainability Lead. Outside of academia, Paul worked as a research engineer with the ETAP ‘Eco-Exemplar’ National Industrial Symbiosis Programme and the award winning Energy Technology Centre, where he led development and implementation of bespoke environmental management and corporate responsibility strategies for Yorkshire SMEs.
