- Course: BSc Geography
This course provided me with the opportunity to focus on the physical aspects of geography which has always been where my main interests lie. Leeds offers such a diverse range of modules enabling you to study a really wide variety of topics, many of which I initially would not have associated with ‘geography’ as I knew it!
While studying, I have learnt the value of research-led teaching. The academic staff are pioneering in their research fields, carrying out the latest research and writing papers – in terms of current knowledge you just cannot get any better than that! As well as this, my degree has provided me with a range of skills that have been beneficial during my time studying here – including teamwork, leadership and communication skills. skills that are going to prove invaluable going forward into the workplace. I have built strong teamwork, leadership and communication skills and I have grown in confidence. My ability and belief in using my initiative has really developed. I can also plan, collect, analyse and interpret data using a variety of computer software and research sources I have been introduced to whilst studying here. This is something the tutors and lecturing staff provide guidance with to ensure that once you reach your third year you are ready to take on your dissertation.
When I reflect on my time here, the highlight for me by far has been the second year field trip to the Austrian Alps. This trip gave me the chance to put into practice the skills I had learnt over the first two years of my degree, as well as place what I had been taught in lectures into a real life context. I also took this as an opportunity to collect data for my dissertation – something I would highly recommend doing!
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at university and I adore the city, but above all I have absolutely loved my degree and looking back I would not change anything. This was definitely the right choice for me and if I could, I would redo the whole thing (yes – even my dissertation) in a heartbeat!
