Professor Martin Clarke


Martin Clarke is Professor of Geographic Modelling in the School. From 1990 to 2004 he was Chief Executive of GMAP Ltd, one of the most successful university spin-out companies in the UK that specialised in network planning and location analysis for some of the world's largest retail corporations including Ford, Walmart, ExxonMobil, HSBC, Tesco, HBoS and many others. From 2008-2013 Martin was a Director of RIBEN – the ESRC Retail Industry Business Engagement Network. This was a successful collaboration between Leeds, Southampton and Oxford Universities aimed at building links between academics and retail organisations. 

Since February 2014 he has been Deputy Director of  the Consumer Data Research Centre (CDRC) based at Leeds. The CDRC is a major ESRC investment aimed at undertaking research using data assets that are collected by consumer facing organisations. Data sources include loyalty card data, mobile phone data, social media data, survey data. Already a number of well known retailers have agreed to share their data on a suitably anonymised basis. Martin is also the PI on an EPSRC Impact Acceleration project (2013-15) which is examining the validity and application of mobile data in conjunction with one of the UK’s largest operators.
