Hard times, good times. Tetrapods through the Permian and Triassic global crisis

Earth Surface Science Institute seminar. Speaker Massimo Bernardi, Science Museum (MUSE), Trento.

Abstract

Global ecosystem perturbations are powerful milestones in our narrative of the history of life. They caused massive biodiversity loss and ecosystem devastation but also powered rapid evolutionary radiations. Global ecosystem perturbations however are also very complex conceptual items whose relevance can be increased or decreased for mere methodological reasons. Grounding on the recent re-examination of several tetrapod findings of Permian and Triassic age in the Dolomites region (Norther Italy), I’ll explore some of the these issues providing examples of how and why hard and good times in tetrapod evolution have sometimes been misunderstood in the past.
