You will study 180 credits in total during your Structural Geology with Geophysics MSc. These are the modules studied in 2021/22 and will give you a flavour of the modules you are likely to study in 2022/23. All modules are subject to change.
Structural Geology independent project – 60 credits
Applying the knowledge and techniques that you have learnt over the duration of the course, you will complete an independent project and dissertation on an exploration structural geological/geophysical topic. You may choose to collaborate with industry partners or with academics within the university.
Applied geophysical methods – 20 credits
You will learn about the various geophysical survey techniques used for examining the sub-surface, developing an understanding of both how these techniques can be used across a range of environments and their potential limitations.
Advanced structural modelling and data analytics – 20 credits
This module will provide you a with theoretical and practical learning focused on integrating a suite of sub-surface data into a common data set. You will be able to understand the underlying principals behind 3D seismic reflection data, attribute analysis and constructions of fault models.
Structural Geology in resources and geo-energy – 20 credits
In this module you will gain an understanding of how knowledge and skills in structural geology and geophysics can be used across a range of exploration, acquisition and storage applications.
Structural models and subsurface interpretation – 20 credits
Gain an understanding in how knowledge and skills in structural geology and geophysics can be used across a range of exploration, acquisition and storage applications.
Geomechanics – 15 credits
Learn to understand the basics of stress, deformation and brittle failure in the upper crust, the influence of stress on rock strength and failure under conditions encountered by fluid flow in the rock volume and understand basic applications of stress analysis and fracture modelling to a number of sub-surface scenarios.
Geodynamics and basin evolution – 15 credits
This module will give you an understanding in the influence of lithospheric and plate scale tectonics on the evolution of sedimentary basics.
3D structure: techniques and visualisation – 10 credits
In this module you will review of fundamental structural geology skills, develop skills required for construction and critical evaluation of cross sections and apply industry-standard 3D modelling/visualisation packages to building structural models.
