Many of our research activities take place in partnership with other centres of excellence, recognising the globally-important nature of the environmental challenges that we investigate. They include collaborations with industry and government as well as universities, and cover a broad range of policy and science. We have an expert team which supports our academics to exchange vital knowledge and experience with industry and other organisations.
Met Office Academic Partnership
Our partnership with the Met Office aims to secure the UK’s position as a world leader in weather forecasting and climate prediction, and also develop the atmospheric science leaders of the future. We collaborate on research, teaching and create future employment opportunities for students. Read more about our partnership with the Met Office.
National Centre for Atmospheric Science
The NERC National Centre for Atmospheric Science (NCAS) is based on our campus at the University of Leeds and provides leadership and world-class research to improve UK predictions of weather and climate. NCAS researchers at Leeds are members of our Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science and are involved in all of the NCAS research programmes, covering climate, air quality, and atmospheric physics.
Centre for the Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics
The Centre for the Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics (COMET) is a NERC Centre of Excellence that uses satellite measurements alongside ground-based observations and geophysical models to study earthquakes and volcanoes, and help understand the hazards they pose.
As well as Leeds, COMET scientists are based at the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Newcastle, Reading, Durham, Liverpool and University College London. COMET works in close partnership with the British Geological Survey (BGS) as well as NERC, the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) and the European Space Agency (ESA), and many other national and international partners.
Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling
The Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling (CPOM) is also a NERC Centre of Excellence, studying processes in the Earth’s polar latitudes that can affect the Earth’s albedo, polar atmosphere and ocean circulation, and global sea level. CPOM uses theoretical and laboratory-derived information to form new models of interactions between the ice, ocean and atmosphere, and uses ground and satellite observations to test these and other climate models.
The CPOM Directorate is based at the University of Leeds, with researchers at the Universities of Bristol, Reading and Lancaster and at University College London. As well as NERC, CPOM works closely with the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), National Oceanography Centre (NOC), National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO) and European Space Agency (ESA).
Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy
The Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy brings together some of the world's leading researchers on climate change economics and policy to promote public and private action on climate change.
The centre is hosted jointly by the School’s Sustainability Research Institute and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Petroleum Leeds is one of the largest groups of petroleum engineering and geoscience specialists in the UK. It provides a single point of contact for research related enquiries, consultancy services, short courses and field workshops in geoscience and engineering.
Jointly based in the School of Earth and Environment and the Faculty of Engineering, Petroleum Leeds builds on our reputation as a world-leading research centre for petroleum-related research and training.
water@leeds is the largest interdisciplinary centre for water research in the UK, bringing together a range of scientific expertise to understand and solve major water issues.
This includes changing climate and rainfall patterns, growing global populations, shifting land use patterns and increasing water consumption. We provide expertise in areas such as geochemistry, soil science, climatology and environmental policy.
Leeds Ecosystem, Atmosphere and Forest Centre
The Leeds Ecosystem, Atmosphere and Forest Centre brings together forest-related research at the University of Leeds. By linking researchers across faculties, LEAF strengthens existing collaborations and encourages new inter-departmental partnerships, establishing the University of Leeds as a leading national centre in forest research.
Energy Leeds brings together engineering, environment and science across the university to address energy challenges of global demand, security, sustainability and environmental mitigation.
Centre for Integrated Energy Research
The Centre for Integrated Energy Research, part of Energy Leeds, aims to deliver enhanced understanding and tools and techniques to enable and accelerate transition to low carbon, secure, economically viable and socially equitable energy systems. It is doing so through world-class research which integrates technological, economic, policy, and socio-technical dimensions of energy.
