Why did you decide to study at Leeds?

I studied for an MSc in a different department last year and became interested in the research going on in the School of Earth and Environment so I spoke to a few supervisors and applied for a PhD here. The University of Leeds has a great reputation for research in environmental sciences.

What is it that makes you passionate about your area of study?

Climate change is the most important issue for our generation to deal with; understanding the physical science is vital when making decisions on the best way to mitigate.

What has been the best part of studying at Leeds so far?

I’ve particularly enjoyed meeting a range of new people with different backgrounds and experiences.

How would you describe the experience of being a PhD student?

It’s great to be able to devote all your time to a topic that you’re really interested in. If you don’t have all the background knowledge that you/your supervisors think you will require then you can attend undergraduate lectures in the relevant subject area to get up to speed. There are also many opportunities to attend training courses and conferences at other universities and overseas.

What are the academic facilities for students like?

Within the School, all research postgraduates get their own desk and computer, so you always have somewhere to work. The campus libraries are good and there are often several copies of the most popular books.

What kind of support do you get from your supervisors?

Brilliant, they’re both very busy but are always willing to talk or have a look at my work.

What do you like about the School of Earth and Environment?

Everyone is really friendly and there’s a very collaborative atmosphere. There are regular seminars and talks to attend, all of a high standard.

Tell us about your career plans.

Not sure yet – I think I’d like to remain in research; the specific area might depend on what I find out during my PhD!

What do you do in your spare time?

Yoga, running, mountain biking, regular trips to Old Trafford.

Tell us what you think about the University as a whole as a place to study.

Leeds is an excellent place to study; having everything on campus is handy and it’s also pretty close to the city centre. There are loads of clubs and societies, there’s something for everyone here.
