Many of our research activities take place in partnership with other centres of excellence, recognising the globally-important nature of the environmental challenges that we investigate. They include collaborations with industry and government as well as universities, and cover a broad range of policy and science.
Met Office Academic Partnership
Our partnership with the Met Office aims to secure the UK’s position as the world leader in weather forecasting and climate prediction, and also develop the atmospheric science leaders of the future. Centre for the Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics
The Centre for the Observation and Modelling of Earthquakes, Volcanoes and Tectonics represents the Dynamic Earth and Geohazards research group within the National Centre for Earth Observation.
This centre involves scientists from the Universities of Leeds, Oxford, Cambridge, Bristol, Glasgow, Reading, and University College London.
It aims to combine satellite observations of Earth's surface movements, topography and gas release with terrestrial observations and modelling to advance understanding of earthquakes, continental deformation and volcanoes, and to quantify seismic and volcanic hazards.
Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling
The Centre for Polar Observation and Modelling, part of the Natonal Centre for Earth Observation, studies processes in the Earth's polar latitudes that may affect the Earth's albedo, polar atmosphere and ocean circulation, and global sea level.
This centre uses theoretical and laboratory-derived understanding to form new models of interactions between the ice, ocean and atmosphere, and uses ground and satellite observations to test the predictions of these and other climate models.
As well as the School of Earth and Environment it has research groups at University College London and the Universities of Reading and Bristol.
Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy
The Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy brings together some of the world's leading researchers on climate change economics and policy to promote public and private action on climate change.
The centre is hosted jointly by the School’s Sustainability Research Institute and the London School of Economics and Political Science.
Petroleum Leeds is one of the largest groups of petroleum engineering and geoscience specialists in the UK. It provides a single point of contact for research related enquiries, consultancy services, short courses and field workshops in geoscience and engineering.
Jointly based in the School of Earth and Environment and the Faculty of Engineering, Petroleum Leeds builds on our reputation as a world-leading research centre for petroleum-related research and training.
water@leeds is the largest interdisciplinary centre for water research in the UK, bringing together a range of scientific expertise to understand and solve major water issues.
This includes changing climate and rainfall patterns, growing global populations, shifting land use patterns and increasing water consumption. We provide expertise in areas such as geochemistry, soil science, climatology and environmental policy.
National Centre for Atmospheric Science
The National Centre for Atmospheric Science is hosted by our Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences, providing leadership and world-class research to improve UK predictions of weather and climate.
Researchers within the School are involved in all of the NCAS research programmes, covering climate change, atmospheric composition and modelling, and weather.
Leeds Ecosystem, Atmosphere and Forest Centre
Brings together forest-related research at the Universit of Leeds. By linking researchers across faculties, the Leeds Ecosystem, Atmosphere and Forest Centre strengthens existing collaborations and encourages new inter-departmental partnerships, establishing the University of Leeds as a leading national centre in forest research.
