ICAS External Seminar

Professor Stephen Mobbs, NCAS

High Resolution Modelling of Volcanic and Industrial Atmospheric Plumes

Abstract:

The purpose of my talk will be to raise awareness in the School of the work and purpose of the National Centre for Atmospheric Science - NCAS.

NCAS is one of NERC's six research centres and is hosted by the University of Leeds. I will aim to help ICAS and School researchers to gain more from the proximity of a national research centre in their field. I will give an overview of NCAS capabilities, services and facilities. I will then describe some recent NCAS work modelling atmospheric gas and particulate plumes at high resolution using a modified numerical weather prediction model. Applications are to volcanic ash and gas plumes as well as emissions from the oil and gas industry. The new modelling capabilities include representations of dense gas flows and multiphase flows.

Brief CV:

I have been Director of NERC's National Centre for Atmospheric Science since 2005. Prior to that I was Head of the School of Earth & Environment. I led the merger of the former Schools of Earth Sciences and Environment to form Earth & Environment. Earlier in my career I variously held positions in the departments of Physics and Applied Mathematics and in the Environment Centre in Leeds. I also spent several years as a Senior Research Scientist at Schlumberger Cambridge Research.
