Dr Thomas Mueller

I’m Thomas Mueller, the programme leader for the Geological Sciences BSc / MGeol, BSc programme. My role as programme leader is varied. I’m responsible for the design and development of the course to ensure that it offers a coherent set of modules and a large part of this involves actively seeking feedback from you as students on the course. I’ll meet with you at the beginning and end of the year to talk to you about this. Another part of my role is to provide guidance to you about the programme and the modules you want to take, as well as any other programme related queries you may have.

The Geological Science programme at Leeds is a great opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and to gain expertise in a discipline that lies at the heart of our understanding of how the Earth works and how it has evolved since its creation around 4.5 billion years ago. In Year 1 you will be introduced to the key components of the discipline including petrology, mapping, mineralogy, sedimentology, stratigraphy, palaeontology, structural geology, plate tectonics and Earth history. In addition, there are many practical and laboratory classes which will provide you with the hands-on skills that are essential to every geologist.

Your course includes practical work e.g. computer modelling techniques and laboratory work, and there is plenty of fieldwork including day trips.

I look forward to meeting you in person soon.
