Why did you choose Leeds?

I remember visiting Leeds on the open day and being really impressed by a combination of the links to industry and the opportunity to go on a year abroad. It was a great city with plenty to do and provided a balance between a good education and a fun student experience.

Looking around the University, the School’s state-of-the-art facilities, I thought that it was really modern and all the lecturers are seemed really friendly so it made sense alongside the opportunity to study abroad.

What was the best or most memorable thing about your time at Leeds?

The field trip to Lanzarote stands out between second and third year.

At the end of the second year we had the opportunity to spend two weeks in Lanzarote and this trip was fully paid for, we stayed in nice apartment, we got to spend a couple of hours by the pool each day but at the same time we were going out in to the filed using equipment which they use in industry and learnt how to use it and learning from our lecturers who are experts in the subject. The trip gave us the opportunity to not only learn about the industry but to also have a good time and get to know everyone on the course a little bit better.

We spent two weeks in the field learning different geophysical techniques and growing together as a course. Field work is so valuable and Leeds offers plenty of field trips during the four years.

How has your time at Leeds shaped or influenced your career since graduating?

Participating in a year abroad, through my integrated Masters, allowed me to get involved in research in a tectonically active environment. I developed a lot while on my year abroad and learnt so much both technically and personally which helped me in gaining a graduate job.

The opportunity to go to New Zealand was a large part of my decision to study Geophysics at Leeds. Through the course, you also have the opportunity to go to other countries, I have friends that went to California, Colorado, Canada and all of them had the best time of their lives.

Studying in New Zealand gave me the opportunity to have exposure to things like Earthquakes and Volcanoes, you obviously don’t get those in the UK and they’re quite a key part of Geophysics and learning about them in the real world was really fascinating and interesting. I also got to meet international students from different places – a fantastic mix of people.

What have you done since graduating?

I have secured a graduate job in the oil industry, which gives me another opportunity to travel the world, it’s also great pay. I’m looking forward to it! Looking back, I was always interested in Geology and Physics and wanted to do a subject that would let me travel the world, so when combining all these things together Geophysics has allowed me to do that.

What would you say to students thinking of doing this degree at Leeds?

Leeds is a great uni and you get the full experience - it's a fun city with so much going on combined with getting a good education and a qualification which employers respect.
