Before undertaking my PhD I had been working in environmental consultancy for ten years since graduation.
Initially working as a placement student environmental manager at BNFL’s Sellafield site I subsequently joined WSP as an environmental consultant in Leeds. This role involved desk studies and ground investigations predominately on contaminated land in the north of England. Highlights included site investigation for the Beauly to Denny power line project involving several weeks of remote working in the highlands and numerous investigations on historic gas works.
Over the course of my five years here I developed an interest in Engineering Geology and did the MSc course back at Leeds part-time. Though working at the same time as studying was sometimes demanding the integration of study and its real world application was fantastic. This cumulated in my thesis project that expanded on a WSP site investigation in to slope stability at Baildon.
Upon completion of the MSc I accepted an offer to work as a geotechnical engineer for Coffey in Australia where I worked up till 2014. Two years were spent in regional New South Wales and two years in Perth, Western Australia. The opportunity to work in different geological and climatic environments was invaluable. Highlights included site investigation on an underwater high-grade iron ore mine and landslide risk assessment in the alps.
