Jennifer Mellors, Year in Industry student at the University of Leeds

Jennifer Mellors

Jennifer is a Geography and Management (BSc) student from the University of Leeds. Jennifer has undertaken an industrial placement year as part of her degree working as a Marketing Placement at Fujitsu. Choosing to do an industrial placement year gives you the opportunity to develop your own skills, and gain a real insight into working life in a particular company or sector.

What does the company do?

Fujitsu is a B2B global IT services and solutions provider. They produce everything from laptops and tablets to innovative and exciting technology in areas around AI (augmented reality) and robotics.

What is your role within the company?

I was working in the UK Marketing team, which involved producing documents, launching campaigns and running events for our UK customers. I also solely managed the UK customer advocacy programme, which involved producing case studies of the work we have done with our customers.

What did you enjoy the most and did you get involved in any interesting projects?

I really enjoyed the variety of work I was able to get involved in and how I was allowed to manage and own projects by myself. There was never a dull moment as every week I contributed to an exciting new project. There were also many opportunities to get involved in extra projects, such as charity work (like the Children In Need call centre), as well as learning more through attending marketing events and talks. One exciting project was designing, organising and managing a stand at an industry-wide event with a 100k budget. It was a huge undertaking but it was so rewarding seeing it all come together and be a success, knowing I organised the whole thing!

Why did you want to undertake a year in industry?

To figure out what I wanted to do! I had no idea where I wanted to pursue a career and having a year in industry has allowed me to experience lots of areas of the business and find out what I do and don’t like. Also, it’s no secret that experience is essential in today’s job market, and a year in industry allows you to gain really valuable experience. Having a whole year to work and develop your skills in the workplace is so important and not only puts you in a better position for job-hunting after graduation but also really helps in the final year!

What do you think you have got out of this experience so far?

I definitely have more direction in my career and know what industry to start looking for jobs in after university. I’m also more commercially aware and feel so much more confident applying for jobs and walking into interviews as I now have some great experience under my belt.

Do you have any tips and advice to current students thinking of undertaking a year in industry?

I would definitely recommend considering a year in industry! There are so many amazing companies that offer placements and it’s such a good opportunity to get some valuable experience and start building up your professional network. Whether you know what career you want to do or not, it’s a great opportunity to gain experience or try out an industry. Placements are competitive, but the university has a great careers centre that can support you throughout the process. Go along to the careers fair with an open mind and talk to loads of people about the placements available and what they offer you. There is so much out there, so just go for it!
