- Course: MSc Transport Planning
- Nationality: Greek
Why did you choose to study this course at the Institute for Transport Studies?
As a Graduate of Urban Planning I decided to focus and work within the transport sector and so I felt the need to further my studies in a Transport-related postgraduate program.
The goal at that moment is to acquire a fundamental basis of knowledge and to understand present and future trends and topics within the industry.
After intense research across different universities I decided to study in ITS due to factors such as the Institute’s ranking, the heavily research-oriented environment and the academic staff that could provide substantial help in any topic of interest. The choice of the specific MSc of Transport Planning was the right choice for me mainly due to the wide spectrum of optional module choices which allows for flexibility and adaptability based on students’ personal interests.
What has been the best aspect of studying your course so far and why?
The broad background of lecturers you learn from throughout the year makes me appreciate every lecture as a great opportunity to learn something new and be inspired by eminent professors. Other than that, students from all around the world with different backgrounds and different interests unite in a space and share knowledge which has broadened my way of thinking.
What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?
I have to say that studying at ITS is an amazing experience but it still remains a postgraduate course with high academic standards. In order to be able to absorb every bit of it students must try hard, and I strongly advise future students to completely dedicate themselves to studying while spending their time in ITS since they will see amazing self-progress and multiple benefits. It will also prepare you, as I believed it has prepared me, for all the real world problems you will find later on in your career, no matter the sector you will work in.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed.
The most exciting project up until now has been the Transport Integrated Project which requires the formation of teams by an expert within ITS in order to conduct a study for a project within a short time period of approximately 2 months.
This has been an experience similar to those you might experience in the real world and besides the acquisition of different areas of knowledge, the fact that people from International and multidisciplinary backgrounds came together and produced amazing results, given the time available, is an experience that is greatly beneficial for students in a personal level. Additionally it is a great starting point for future job interviews as well.
Have you been on any fieldtrips? If so, what was yourexperience of these?
Throughout the year numerous fieldtrips are organised by the staff that take place both in and outside of Leeds. The most noteworthy of the first half of the academic year was without a doubt the ITS Metropoly game, which was an amazing experience that brought students together and motivated us to travel around Leeds.
Other than that, the visit to the bumper cars before the Christmas break was both a fun and educational day for all participants. Additionally, fellow students have told me they had an amazing time on their Sheffield trip which unfortunately I missed and of course there is always the European trip at the end of the year which past students have mentioned is the highlight of an amazing year.
What are your ambitions for the future?
My personal ambitions regarding my future are to further my studies to PhD level and following that to work under a research-oriented institution or a Non-Governmental Organisation.
What would you say to students coming to do the same course?
If a student has a strong interest in any transport-related subject and they are willing to spend a hardworking year with multiple benefits in the end, this is the place to study at. If you are determined to evolve and progress, the choice to study on any of the available topics within ITS is the right choice for you.
