One of the largest uncertainties in modelling the implications (including energy) of automated vehicles is how far the existing vehicle ownership will be replaced by automated mobility services. Although there is a large media hype toward a near total switch to automated electric mobility services, early work (by the supervisor) points out to the limitations of the few existing studies and indicates that this may not be the case.
Even within automated mobility services there are options between exclusive use and shared use, which have different implication for traffic and energy consumption. This project will investigate these various potential modes (ownership, automated ridehailing, automated ridesharing), and their potential relative share in future. This will then be used to calculate potential energy, carbon and distributional implications of automated vehicles.
Depending on the student’s interest and expertise, various methods may be used including data analysis and visualization, rule-based heuristics, econometric modelling, qualitative methods such focus group study. However, there will remain a strong quantitative component.
You must have achieved a bachelor degree with a 2:1 (hons) or equivalent, or a good performance in a Masters level course preferably in a quantitative discipline. We also recognise relevant industrial and academic experience.
Quantitative background essential. Some expertise in data handling, analysis and visualization, econometric modelling will be very useful.
