Thiago Guimarães

Profile

I am a PhD research student at the Institute for Transport Studies investigating accessibility to healthcare by socially disadvantaged groups.

My research project consists in three main components:

  1. First, I have developed a new conceptual-analytical framework that contributes to enhance the understanding of accessibility to healthcare. This framework is informed by theories of human needs and the social exclusion approach to transport.
  2. Secondly, through a number of focus group conversations, I have identified the more important transport and health-related barriers residents of low-income neighbourhoods face to get access to healthcare in Sao Paulo – a Brazilian city marked by deep social, transport and health inequalities.
  3. Finally, I have developed a GIS-based accessibility measure consistent to people’s transport and health needs.

The PhD project is supported by a competitive scholarship from the Brazilian Council for Scientific and Technological Development.
