As an Independent transport consultant I am currently involved in advising community groups. As the leader of a transport think tank and campaign group, I am responsible for advancing sustainable, integrated and equitable transport for the Cambridge region.
My experience at ITS has given me knowledge, clarity and confidence to challenge bad policies and schemes, and to propose more complete alternatives.
I chose my course at ITS and the University of Leeds because ITS is highly multidisciplinary; transport is not treated as a branch of engineering (though perhaps not quite as the social science it really is). It is also the only transport department in the UK to offer a course on transport economics.
My advice to students interested in this course and a career in transport is that the course is a good grounding in economic appraisal in the wider context of transport planning and scheme design. It will therefore suit students who want to work on developing business cases for transport schemes, or to work on transport policy, strategy and plans - in central or local government, or in any of the consultancies to which this work is outsourced.
The highlight of my career so far has been the opportunity to provide oral evidence to the House of Commons Transport Committee in its enquiry into road pricing.
