Royal Meteorological Society talk: Flying on nothing but fresh air

Speaker: Tony Flannery, Burn Gliding Club

Tony began his flying career 31 years ago and has flown well over 2500 hours as a solo pilot, a gliding instructor and a pilot of powered aeroplanes. In this time he has accumulated the knowledge to achieve solo, bronze, silver, gold and diamond awards for duration and distance flying, all of which were achieved by learning about, and using to their best advantage, naturally occurring meteorological conditions.

As a gliding instructor, Tony feels much personal satisfaction being able to pass on this knowledge and experience to others, so that they can enjoy the thrill of flying without an engine.

In this talk he will provide a highlight of his adventures through a series of photographs and will demonstrate the practical side of using the weather to achieve flight, focusing predominantly on thermals and mountain waves.
