Extra £1m funding awarded to SENSE project

Training for next generation of earth observation leaders renewed.

An additional year of funding for the SENSE Centre for Doctoral Training has been announced, as part of the £122.6 million of science and engineering spending recently announced by the Government.

The SENSE Centre for Doctoral Training Programme for Earth Observation - The Satellite Data in Environmental Science (SENSE) Centre will train the next generation of earth observation leaders, with the expertise and knowledge to address earth system challenges.

Professor Simon P Kelly, Head of School of Earth and Environment explained. “The extension of the NERC funded CDT, SENSE, is great news and it’s strategic for the Earth Observation ambitions of the School of Earth and Environment and the university climate principles strategy. The renewed CDT also has support from 42 commercial space companies committing to the CASE support for projects.”

This funding will enable the SENSE CDT to support an additional cohort of up to 20 PhD studentships and is vital to continue the highly skilled workforce the UK needs to advance the UK EO sector into the future.
