Jack Smith

Profile

I am a PhD student in the Institute of Applied Geosciences studying how AI techniques can be applied to improve the efficiency of railway tunnel structural condition assessments.

I studied an MEng in Engineering Science at the University of Oxford and graduated in 2019 with a specialism in Civil Engineering. My masters project studied the dynamic response of masonry arch bridges. Specifically, I developed a semi-analytical method to predict the response of an arch subjected to a moving point load.

After graduation, I worked for 2 years at Arcadis as a Consulting Civil Engineer. There, I worked in an international consortium designing parts of the Hurontario LRT in Canada.  I started studying for a PhD at Leeds in 2021.

Research interests

At the moment, I am investigating how deep learning can be applied to automatically segment defects in masonry tunnels from LIDAR data. I am using PyTorch to analyse different learning models.
