Profile
I am an interdisciplinary marine scientist focusing on interactions between coastal communities and marine ecosystems. My research focuses on sustainable resource management and the development of interventions which can simultaneously deliver positive outcomes for marine biodiversity and well-being outcomes for local communities.
My research combines both quantitative and qualitative methods with a focus on participatory research. More recently I have also applied innovative and creative methods including storytelling, art and participatory mapping. I have conducted empirical research in Maldives, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the UK. I joined the University of Leeds in 2023 from Newcastle University, where I was a research fellow on the NERC funded Engaging Environments project.
My PhD provided a holistic overview of the complex interactions between sharks and resource dependent communities in the Republic of Maldives while identifying cost-effective approaches to monitor elusive marine predators in data poor regions. I used methods from biological and social sciences to: i) quantify spatial-temporal trends in shark abundance; ii) investigate fisher-shark interactions; and iii) understand how social, ecological, and behavioural factors influence support for shark conservation.
Research interests
My research interests include marine conservation, coastal livelihoods, human-wildlife interactions and marine governance. I have specific interests in sharks, coral reefs, marine protected areas and community engagement.
Current and recent projects include:
- Systems approach for establishing climate smart aquaculture to balance biodiversity conservation and food security in coral reef ecosystems - Ankitha Manohar
- NERC Engaging Environments: https://engagingenvironments.org
- Socio-ecological indicators for sustainable management of global marine biodiversity conservation using sharks as a model species.
