Profile
I completed my PhD at Newcastle University exploring the social and ecological impacts of the Maldives shark sanctuary, with a particular focus on fisher-shark conflict in small-scale reef fisheries. I then worked as a post-doc on the NERC Engaging Environments project working closely with diverse coastal community groups in Northeast England to co-create environmental citizen science projects. I used quantitative surveys, qualitative in-depth interviews and focus group discussion to assess how public participation in co-created research projects influenced environmental awareness, behaviour, and perceptions of science. At the University of Leeds I work on projects investigating gendered impacts and adaptation strategies for climate change hazards in small-scale fisheries, socio-economic impacts of non-native aquaculture, and bridging the gap between freshwater and marine research communities. I also established an Ocean Network bringing together >50 colleagues from across the university.
Research interests
I am interested in human-environment interactions and environmental perceptions, including how people perceive environmental change, how change impacts them and how they respond. I work primarily in coastal contexts, using interdisciplinary approaches to examine complex social-ecological systems.
My research combines both quantitative and qualitative methods with a focus on participatory research. More recently I have also applied innovative and creative methods including storytelling, art, and participatory mapping. I have conducted empirical research in Maldives, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the UK.
