Profile
I am a glaciologist and lecturer in machine learning and climate science in the Institute for Climate and Atmospheric Science at the University of Leeds. This is quite a broad title and reflects a generally wide-ranging interest in science and in the methods we use for scientific discovery. My work to date has been largely focussed on the Antarctic Ice Sheet, in particular, the role played by fractures in its dynaimcs. This involves the development and use of numerical modelling, machine learning and Earth observation methods.
Research interests
Cheifly, I am interested in the behaviour of the Earth’s ice sheets: their physics, their sensitivity to changing climate forcing and how certain we can be in the manner of their past and future evolution. My interests also lie in the development of techniques that we may use to answer these questions, for example, in the application of scientific machine learning to data-driven scientific discovery in glaciology – and geoscience more generally.
