Professor Simon Bottrell

Professor Simon Bottrell

Profile

From a very traditional first degree in Geology and Mineralogy, I moved to a PhD in geochemistry at the School of Environmental Sciences (ENV), University of East Anglia. At UEA I realized that I could apply my skills across a far broader range of environmental problems and this shaped my future career direction. I spent one year of my PhD at the labs of the Geochemistry Directorate of the (then) Institute of Geological Sciences (now BGS) where I first learned the practicalities of stable isotope analysis. Moving to Leeds, I set up a stable isotope laboratory in the late 1980s to pursue research into sedimentary geochemistry and hydrochemistry. I have also been involved in student education throughout my time at Leeds, initially mainly devising and leading field classes for both Masters and undergraduate courses and more latterly also teaching hydrogeology and contaminant processes.

Research interests

Simon Bottrell has 35 years’ experience of applying stable isotope tracers to problems in geology and environmental science, particularly to sediments, soils, groundwater and glacial melt-waters. This has led to a body of work leading to over 5,000 career citations (Web of Science) and an h-factor of 40-something.

Qualifications

  • BA (Hons) (Oxon) Natural Sciences (Geology and Mineralogy)
  • PhD Environmental Sciences, UEA (Geochemistry)

Professional memberships

  • Fellow of the Geological Society of London (since 2008)

Student education

I currently teach applied hydrogeology and contaminant behaviour and risk assessment at Masters level and hydrogeology at undergraduate level, where I use experience from consultancy to ensure that the material is relevant to current professional practise. I have a passion for field teaching and participate in field teaching on a range of undergraduate courses.
