What have you been doing since finishing your studies?
Since finishing my studies, I have been working for Network Rail as an Information Coordinator at York Rail Operating Centre. The role involves sending information through email messaging or Tyrell of incidents that occur on the railway that will have an impact on passenger and freight services.
What experiences at Leeds have particularly helped with your career?
In the first semester of my Masters degree, I had a lot of assignments due before Christmas. This definitely helped me plan my workload and organise myself – something which is important in the workplace.
Looking back, why did you choose to study at the University of Leeds?
I have a big interest in the rail industry and want to pursue a career within it. This course provided a great chance to further my studies, so I knew it was the course for me.
I choose the University of Leeds because the Institute of Transport studies is world-renowned for its work within the transport sector. The chance to study an ideal course at an excellent university was a no-brainer.
What were the best aspects of studying on your course and why?
One of the best aspects was that the lecturers were all very experienced people within their fields of study. This showed through the quality of teaching and content. The course also gave me the opportunity to meet people from the industry who gave excellent guest lectures and demonstrated a real-life aspect to certain topics.
Did you work on any interesting projects at university?
One of the most interesting topics was part of the transport integrated project module. We were put into teams with students from ITS Masters courses. Our project focussed on improving sustainable access to the planned station at the White Rose Shopping centre in Leeds. This gave me a good experience of working with others from a variety of different backgrounds, similar to what I would expect in the workplace.
What’s the most important thing you learned during your time at university?
One of the most important things I learnt at university was that there are always people around to help you if you’re struggling with certain assignments or just life in general. Make sure you take advantage of it.
Would you recommend your course to others?
I would definitely recommend the course. The course is a good step forward for people like myself who did a BSc in a transport-related subject and want to work in the rail industry after graduating. If you are already working in the rail Industry, you’ll also gain a deeper insight into specific areas – such as passenger demand forecasting and investment appraisal.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with new students?
Enjoy your time at university and make sure you are organised!
