Rethinking public services for a sustainable future

Sustainability Research Institute seminar. Speaker Anna Coote, Principal Fellow, New Economics Foundation.

This session explores the case for ‘universal basic services’ (UBS) as a radical, realisable and cost-effective alternative to proposals for ‘universal basic income’ (UBI).  It considers why collectively provided (or ‘public’) services matter; what range of services people need; and how they can best be designed, delivered and funded to make a positive contribution to health and wellbeing, to reducing socio-economic inequalities and to building a sustainable welfare system.  It concludes that UBS and UBI are not natural policy companions because they diverge in ideological, political and practical ways.
