Inaugural Lecture : Professor Thijs Dekker "Is it worth the time?"
Professor Thijs Dekker will focus on some of the key challenges of the transport appraisal process.
In this inaugural lecture, Professor Thijs Dekker will focus on some of the key challenges of the transport appraisal process. These challenges include our ability to quantify behavioural responses to changes in transport infrastructure, pricing and policy, and our ability to assign monetary values to the societal impacts of such interventions.
Building on his national and international experience valuing changes in travel time, Thijs will highlight the importance of aligning the right study design with the right methods for data analysis (e.g. choice models) to provide sound policy advice.
A second theme of the lecture is uncertainty. Thijs will argue that the robustness of the transport appraisal process can only be improved by being more open about what we know, what we assume, and what we simply cannot be sure about. Throughout the lecture Thijs will reflect on his academic journey and celebrate the collaborations which have contributed to reaching this academic milestone. It has been worth his time.!
