Marie Berthet

Profile

I joined the University of Leeds in 2012 as a part-time PhD student, under the supervision of Paul Chatterton and David Bell. Throughout my PhD, I worked simultaneously as participatory urban development consultant, supporting bottom-up, community-led urban design projects. I completed my PhD in 2022 and worked as City Planner for Leeds City Council for just under a year. Subsequently, I became a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Leeds, researching diversity in green spaces. The following year, I was awarded a Policy Support Research Fund, together with Paul Chatterton and Becca Brunk, a project for which we partnered with Leeds City Council and local green space provider charity, Hyde Park Source. In 2024, I was appointed Research Assistant for the MSc in Ecological Economics at the Sustainable Research Institute. I was also granted a fresh grant from the Policy Support Fund in partnership with the same research colleagues, LCC and two groups leading community climate hubs (Imagine Leeds and Otley 2030). Our project looks at the ‘One-Stop-Shop’ model for community-led climate hubs, with the aim of investigating mixed models of management for public assets (Public-Civic Partnerships).

Responsibilities

  • Research Assistant for the MSc in Ecological Economics
  • Co-Investigator on the project: Evaluating the impact of the ‘One-Stop-Shop’ model for climate hubs

Research interests

I am an expert in urban co-production, which is the process by which civil society groups, public bodies and scientists ally to design better, fairer and more sustainable cities. My initial research looked at youth-led movement of resistance against the corporatisation of nightlife in Switzerland, and co-production as an alternative to neoliberal policies. I am interested in what neoliberalism does to cities, the role of the State in promoting it and co-production as an alternative mode of space-making.
