What course are you studying?

MSc. Food Quality and Innovation

Why did you decide to study a masters at the University of Leeds?

The University of Leeds as a brand provided the right mix of academic and co-curricular development. Facilities, infrastructure combined with prime location and student-friendly - city attracted me to choose this University.

What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University so far and why?

The best aspect of the course is the opportunity to apply theory through the projects and labs assignments, as well as providing immense exposure to scientific and industrial practices.

Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed.

I am studying MSc. Food Quality and Innovation, which involves new product development showing the steps from the idea of the product, generating the manufacturing, sensory analysis, packaging and marketing plans to implementing it all the way. It is equal parts challenging and exciting. My new product development project is – Veggie Sticks with garlic mayonnaise dip. We tried targeting a larger audience for a healthy snack, which is not only nutritious but equally tasty and appetizing.

I work in a group of six international students, from different countries right from Paraguay to South Korea. This makes the teamwork even more fun as we learn something new from each other every day. We are in the process of completing the project, and I feel I have achieved a milestone in academic, socialising, teamwork, organisation, but have still loads to learn.

What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?

Being a university city, Leeds is built around student life. Clubs, libraries, cafes, concerts, meetups - Leeds has it all and more. Even better is the international mix, you can find people from every corner of the world.

The city has all the needs of everyone no matter what age or background you are from. Leeds is also only, 1 hour away from both Manchester and York so you can travel around easily.

What are your ambitions for the future?

A niche specialization has empowered me to apply my knowledge to create and implement solutions in the food industry. Whether it be in the form of a product, a service or an organization.

What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future

The international exposure provided me with a chance to get out of my comfort zone and interact with some of the best minds from around the world. I learned, not only the ability to convey my thoughts to a person from different background but also listen to others critics or opinions on similar thoughts. Working, partying and travelling alongside with different people has been a great experience for me.
