The School of Food Science and Nutrition have announced two groundbreaking funded PhD opportunities for academic year 2018/19.
This is a research studentship funded by Breast Cancer UK. The award covers the full value of the UK/EU course fee and a maintenance grant of £14,553 per annum. Bench fees and writing-up costs, to a maximum of £5,000.
Many cancers are now thought to be preventable through diet and lifestyle choices but the exact mechanisms for prevention remain unclear. This project will explore the hypothesis that oxysterols, secreted by non-cancer host cells into the microenvironment, are taken up by the adjacent cancer cells, where they bind and activate members of the nuclear receptor super-family of transcription factors, leading to chemotherapy resistance and metastasis.

Adolescents’ dietary behaviour and the school environment
This a research studentship funded by School of Food Science and Nutrition. The award covers the full value of the UK/EU course fee and a maintenance grant of £15,000 per annum. Bench fees and writing-up costs, to a maximum of £9,000.
Adolescents’ diet in the UK falls short of dietary recommendations, with high intakes of saturated fat and sugar, low fruit and vegetable consumption, as well as a propensity for nutrient-poor and fast food. This is reflected in schools, where adolescents typically demonstrate poor food choice behaviour. With more than 3 million pupils in secondary schools in England, the school environment is a sound setting for a dietary intervention. The intention is that this study will inform the development of a public health intervention to effect behaviour change and shift adolescents’ food choice and dietary patterns.
