Dr Sarah A. Batterman

Profile

I am an ecosystem ecologist and biogeochemist who investigates controls on the carbon cycle and biodiversity under global change. My mission is to help resolve the future of the terrestrial biosphere and the role of tropical forests as a sink or source of carbon dioxide over the next century. To date, my group has focused on the biodiversity, nutrient cycling and nutrient limitation of tropical forests. We also study savanna, temperate forest and boreal forest ecosystems. At Agua Salud in Panama, we lead a large-scale ecosystem manipulation experiment where we are testing the role of nutrients in the recovery of forest carbon after deforestation and land use. We are also interested in how the diversity of plant nutrient acquisition and use strategies address and overcome nutrient constraints, and have studied the strategy of symbiotic nitrogen fixation extensively.

In addition to my position at Leeds, I am an associate scientist at Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies in upstate New York, U.S.A.
