Profile
I am a PhD student in the School of Food Science and Nutrition interested in the effects of natural plant based extracts (PBEs) within the gut microbiome. Current research of the effect of PBEs within the gut is not extensive enough, currently primarily comprised of short (24/48 hr) fecal fermentations in vitro or animal or cell studies which do not fully reflect human significance. I hope to provide further insights into interactions between polyphenols and the gut microbiota and metabolic processes involved through utilisation of novel long term fecal fermentation system (MiGut), more complex cell studies and human nutritional trial. I also aim to provide evidence for new dietary supplementation with products that reduce waste streams and potentially confer a MedDiet microbiota.
