Profile
Richard is a Senior Lecturer in Sedimentology and Tectonics. His core research interests focus on achieving an holistic understanding of sedimentary processes and sedimentary architecture within active continental rifts and across the rift to continental margin transition. Current projects include research in the present Gulf of Corinth Rift, including studies arising from IODP Expedition 381, and the Red Sea Rift. Particular interests include: Sedimentary and sequence stratigraphic responses to rift evolution; high frequency climate change and sediment flux response to climate change; drainage basin evolution and impact on sediment flux; fault geometries and quantification of faulting rates and depocentre migration. Outcomes are applied to improving predictions of potential hydrocarbon distributions and reservoir quality in equivalent subsurface settings.
A second body of work relates to the characterization of carbonate depositional architectures and associated hyrocarbon reservoir properties, with studies commonly being carried out in collaboration with petrophysicists. These studies focus on carbonate rimmed platform and other geometries in syn-rift settings, but also on carbonates from other tectonic settings and from settings impacted by fluctuating palaeoclimatic conditions. Attention if focused on the relative significance of primary depositional, diagenetic and fracture controls upon reservoir quality in each case.
Richard is currently Collaborative Director of our Hosted MSc programme in the Middle East and Director of the Institute of Applied Geoscience (previously Co-Director 2015-18).
