Profile

I obtained a position at the University of Leeds in 2023 and I currently work as a Research Fellow in Nutrition and Lifestyle Analytics in the School of Food Science and Nutrition at the University of Leeds and work on the DIO-Food and FIO-Food projects. On these project I am working in partnership with UK supermarket retailers to evaluate the impacts of the legislation which restricts the placement of products high in fat, sugar and salt (HFSS) in England.

I obtained a first class honours degree in Nutrition and Public Health from the University of Huddersfield before moving to the University of Leeds to complete an MSc in Health Psychology and an MA in Social Research. After graduating, I was awarded an ESRC funded Advanced Quantative Methods Studentship and went on to undertake my PhD under the supervision of Dr Alison Fildes, Dr Clare Llewellyn, Dr Andrea Smith, Dr Louise Dye and Dr Clare Lawton, examining the Obesogenic Home Environment, Appetite and Weight in Childhood, using data from the Gemini twin birth cohort. After completing my PhD, I joined the Obesity Research Group within the Department of Behavioural Science and Health at University College London (UCL). I worked as a Research Fellow in Eating Behaviours on the a range of large scale multidisciplinary research projects including: the APPETItE project (Appetite in Preschoolers: Producing Evidence for Tailoring Interventions Effectively), the Family Food Experience Study-London, the Canadian Institute for Health Research and MQ Mental Health: Appetite, Parental feeding practices & Eating Disorders project. After working at UCL, I returned to the University of Leeds to take a position as a Research Fellow in Appetite Research in the School of Psychology, before moving to my current role as a Research Fellow in Nutrition and Lifestyle Analytics in the School of Food Science and Nutrition.

I am also a core member of the Gemini study, a large population-based birth cohort of twins which aims to advance understanding of the genetic and environmental influences on appetite and growth. I have played a key role in several rounds of data collection and provide the cohort with data management and statistical expertise.

Responsibilities

  • Early Career Member Yorkshire Network Association for the Study of Obesity (ASO)

Research interests

I have a keen interest in public health nutrition and utilising novel data to answer questions about diet and health at a population-level. My previous research has focused on psychosocial, environmental and socioeconomic determinants of food choice and health outcomes. I have expertise in public health nutrition and behavioural psychology. My current research utilises supermarket transaction data to evaluate the impacts of national public health policy on food purchasing behaviours and aims to investigate whether the legislation has impacted different communities equally. This work will create unique insights for industry and policymakers ahead of the proposed implementation of the legislation in the devolved nations.
