Entry requirements
PhD
To study for a PhD, you’d be expected to hold a bachelor degree in a relevant subject (2.1 or above or equivalent) or a good honours degree together with a Masters degree.
A PhD can be taken full-time or part-time:
- Full-time: 3 years + 1 year (maximum) writing up time
- Part-time: 5 years + 2 years (maximum) writing up time
MSc by Research
To study for an MSc by Research, you’d be expected to hold a good bachelor degree in a relevant subject.
An MSc by Research can be taken full-time or part-time:
- Full-time: 1 year
- Part-time: 2 years
English language requirements
If English isn’t your first language, you’ll need to produce evidence of a language qualification before registration as a postgraduate student.
Our School of Food Science and Nutrition English Language Requirements are:
Start dates before and including 1st August 2026 (in the 2025/26 academic year):
- IELTS - an overall score of 6.5 with no score less than 6.0 in any components
- Other English Language qualifications may be acceptable, please contact us to find out more.
Start dates after 1st September 2026 (in the 2026/27 academic year):
