Why did you decide to study at the University of Leeds?
I decided to study at The University of Leeds because of three reasons. Firstly, I loved the variety of modules their course offered. They span from the basics of human physiology, food chemistry and physics in the first year to a lot more interesting topics like the effects of food additives and the roles of food in treatment in the second and final year. Next, I wanted to experience a different style of learning. I wanted to learn through research and have a more hands-on approach to learning. Lastly, I fell in love with the city! I love how the city has a mixture of quaint streets and modern architecture. Also, it’s easy to escape the ‘city buzz’ when you need to.
What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University and why?
I would say the best aspect of studying on my course at the University of Leeds has been our professors. Most of the professors at the School of Food Science and Nutrition are researchers in their field and have both an in-depth understanding of the subject and information about recent research in the field. This makes sure there is always something new to learn from them.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed so far?
Some of the exciting projects I have completed so far include an assignment that include a market survey where we looked at specific products what the general population in Leeds consumes. I have also completed a project in research style, in this assignment, we conducted an experiment using skills we had gained over the past few lab classes and presented our results in the format of a research paper.
What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?
Leeds is a student city. It’s always buzzing with activities for everyone; Whether you are a foodie or a musical person, looking for adventure or nightlife. I like to call Leeds the ‘perfect sized city’, its big enough to have outskirts and quiet spaces and small enough to able to travel to any corner within a short duration.
What are your ambitions for the future?
My ambitions for the future are to become a travelling dietician. I want to be able to travel to various places and be able to adapt my practice to their culture and eating habits.
What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?
I think so far, being a student ambassador for the School of Food Science and Nutrition has been one of the most helpful experiences here. It has helped improve my ability to communicate and work in a team. Also, it’s just the first year, I know there will be many more opportunities to experience.
What would you say to students coming to do the same course?
I would say they have made an excellent choice and to be prepared for a lot of research-based learning. I would include that it is important to make use of the time available to them in the first year to do as much as possible.
