University of Leeds ranks first in the UK for Food Science and Technology

The Shanghai Ranking’s 2024 Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) has placed the University of Leeds first in the UK for Food Science and Technology.

Professor Paul Sharp, Head of the School of Food Science and Nutrition, said: “I am delighted that the strength of the University of Leeds in Food Science and Technology has been recognised in the Shanghai GRAS rankings.

This is testament to the outstanding research taking place in the School of Food Science and Nutrition and more widely at the University of Leeds.

The GRAS rankings use a range of objective academic indicators and third-party data to measure the performance of the world’s universities in various subjects.

The University of Leeds’s place in the ranking is a testament to the strength of its interdisciplinary research and innovation, where its world-leading experts in food colloids and diet and health find innovative approaches to existing and emerging challenges.

The School of Food Science and Nutrition applies basic principles of physics, chemistry and biology to address issues from food production to digestion, collaborating with researchers across campus and the world to improve problems which affect consumers, governments and industry – nationally and internationally.

“As someone who began their journey at the University of Leeds with a Master’s degree, returned for a PhD, and later undertook a postdoctoral positions, I can say with deep conviction that being part of the School of Food Science and Nutrition has been one of the most transformative and rewarding experiences of my life.
