Colleagues present climate research in parliament

A team from the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission (YHCC) shared research findings about regional climate action with parliamentarians as part of Sense About Science’s Evidence Week.

Kate Lock, Andrew Wood, Muriel Bonjean Stanton and Amelia Duncan spoke with 12 MPs, two peers, two Whitehall staff members and two media professionals at the Houses of Parliament in January.

They shared their research, which shows how place-based interventions and schemes – projects that take into account the needs and context of their locations – can help deliver local and national net zero goals.

The YHCC’s policy brief ‘Regional climate actions that make a real difference,’ is part of a wider campaign that highlights the need for mission-driven action around decarbonisation.

It followed the YHCC’s previous work, which assessed ways that Yorkshire and the Humber’s could achieve net zero by 2038.

Kate Lock, Policy and Communications Manager for the YHCC, said: “It was an intense morning, meeting so many MPs and talking about our work, but a fruitful one. MPs wanted to know what the Commission does – and, crucially, how they can support our work – and we came away with lots of leads and actions to follow up on.

“Evidence Week has been a fantastic opportunity to commence our regional, national, and international advocacy. The research we presented informs our Climate Action Plan for Yorkshire and the Humber, and we think the Commission, and the Action Plan, are models that other regions can use.

“Our message to government is that we can help the UK to become a climate leader, and the interest we had in our work – from MPs from outside the region too – shows the potential for us to increase momentum on national climate action.”

The opportunity to connect with parliamentarians opens new doors for collaboration, increases the impact of research and enables evidence-based policymaking around the climate.
