Dr Malcolm Morgan

Profile

I originally trained as a Civil Engineer at the University of Warwick, before undertaking a PhD at the University of Cambridge titled Sustainability Assessment of England’s Housing using Open Data. My subsequent work has included:

  • Research Associate, University of Cambridge, on EPSRC Blue-Green Cities
  • Research Fellow, Sustainability Research Institute on UKERC Governance of Low-carbon Innovation in Domestic Energy Retrofits
  • Research Fellow, Leeds Institute for Data Analytics
  • Research Fellow for Transport and Spatial Analysis, Institute for Transport Studies

Research interests

My research focuses on the spatial distribution of energy use and carbon emissions, with a particular focus on transport and housing. I work on understanding both why energy use changes between neighbourhoods and whether this is due to choice or circumstances. My research often emphasizes producing practical tools to aid in policy-making such as:

  • Propensity to Cycle Tool (www.pct.bike)
  • Cycling Infrastructure Prioritisation Toolkit (www.cyipt.bike)
  • Place-Based Carbon Calculator (www.carbon.place)

I am especially interested in data analysis and visualization and have published several R packages including OpenTripPlanner for R and UK2GTFS.
