Environment staff receive Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy

Three academics from the Faculty of Environment have been awarded Fellowships from the Higher Education Academy.

Helen Durham and Andy Newing from the School of Geography, and Ian Philips from the Institute for Transport Studies received the awards for their commitment to teaching excellence.

“I am delighted to be awarded Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. As a lecturer on the Teaching and Scholarship pathway my priorities are delivering high quality and effective student education and enhancing the student experience." said Helen Durham.

“Reflecting upon and developing my own professional practices, and influencing colleagues in their teaching and learning practices, is therefore my focus in order to achieve these aims. To receive recognition from the Higher Education Academy  (AdvanceHE) for my commitment to these areas has been particularly rewarding and encouraging as I continue to explore new ways to enrich the learning journey for our student community” she added.

“I’m delighted to have been awarded Fellowship of the HEA.  As well as recognising my current skills, I have enjoyed how the process has allowed me to reflect upon and further develop my teaching practice” said Ian Philips.

“As a former secondary school teacher, I’ve always been keen to reflect on and develop my teaching practice in my current role as Lecturer in Retail Geography. I’m lucky to teach across a range of diverse human geography, GIS and spatial analytics modules and to lead the School of Geography contributions to the interdisciplinary MSc Consumer Analytics and Marketing Strategy programme. These activities have given my many opportunities to develop and apply new teaching and assessment methods, especially within hands on practical classes undertaken by students."

"I also deliver advanced methods training for the National Centre for Research Methods (NCRM), raising the profile of the Faculty of Environment as a provider of applied teaching and learning which reaches a wider audience. HEA Fellowship via the PRiSE scheme has enabled me to reflect on these student education and external training activities and to ensure that I continue to offer students a positive learning experience” said Andy Newing.

The Higher Education Academy is a way of encouraging academics to continue professional development within teaching and support for learning. Gaining a Fellowship evidences the commitment to being part of the vibrant student education community at the University of Leeds. The UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF) reflects the teaching and student education support, which is necessary in order to gain a HEA Fellowship. 

Academics who wish to be considered for HEA Fellowships are able to apply through the Professional Recognition in Student Education (PRiSE) scheme by making a written submission.
