Professor Robert Vanderbeck becomes a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences

Professor of Human Geography, has been awarded the fellowship for his contribution to social science.

The Academy of Social Sciences is a community of academics, societies and practitioners in the social sciences who aim to promote the social sciences in the UK for public benefit.  

Professor Vanderbeck is an interdisciplinary social scientist and human geographer whose recent research focuses on the impact of religion on law and policy related to sexual orientation equality and LGBT+ rights in the UK and beyond 

Professor Vanderbeck said, "The Academy of Social Sciences plays a crucial role in helping policy makers, educators, and the general public appreciate the importance of social science as a tool for both understanding and changing the world.  As such, it's an honour to have been elected to fellowship of the Academy at a moment when the world needs good social science more than ever to confront the many intersecting crises we are facing."

Fellows are elected by their peers for excellent work and impact and the Academy supports their fellows to reach key stakeholders like government and policymakers with their research. It also supports collaboration with other academics, practitioners and societies. 

Robert is currently completing work on a collaborative project on how coordinated anti-LGBT religious protests have shaped the provision of inclusive relationships education in England's schools.  His other research interests include the geographies of youth, intergenerational justice, and debates over sexuality and gender within transnational religious organisations.
