Why did you decide to study at the University of Leeds?
I decided to study at the University of Leeds for not only its reputation and the status of this subject, but also all the different opportunities the university offers. It is an all-rounder university where the focus is not just academics, but also the social aspect of university life. Leeds is a beautiful and vibrant city and as somebody who comes from Dubai, the city really caught my eye. There is a lot to do in this city and it's quite difficult to get bored of it.
What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University and why?
In the field of Food Science and Nutrition, there is never a dull moment as there are developments in the industry on a regular basis. There are also a variety of modules the School offers as well as discovery modules, where you can pick one module from any other school of interest. I picked an online module: Sports and exercise psychology. This was quite different from what I was studying and it gave me a brief insight into the sports field.
I also enjoy our practical sessions - you learn the theory in lectures and learn how to apply that in the industry in our lab sessions which makes our learning more interactive.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed so far?
Since I am a first-year student, we haven’t had too many projects, however, for one of our modules, Human physiology and nutrition, we had to analyse our own diets using a software called Windiets. We had to look at different nutrient compositions in our foods and give ourselves future recommendations, like a dietician. This further developed my interest in the nutrition side of the course.
We also had the opportunity to bake our own bread in one of our Food technology laboratory sessions, where we learnt the different techniques to make bread in the industry.
What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?
Leeds is a city where you can find the perfect balance between student/academic life and social life. It is a bustling city with endless social opportunities for students. Since Leeds has 5 different universities, it is a very student friendly city. You will never be short of things to do in this city; from nightclubs to restaurants and museums to nature walks. There are also a lot of societies in the university you can join. There are religious/cultural societies where you can get connected with people from similar backgrounds. You can also try a lot of different things from dancing to theatre, to kayaking!
What are your ambitions for the future?
I am trying to keep my options open right now, however, I am slightly leaning towards the nutrition side of my course. One of the things I am considering is becoming a dietician and working in the field for a few years and eventually being able to manage a business of my own.
What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?
Our assignments, lab reports, presentations, coursework have taught us so many skills that we can apply in the future in our careers. My writing, speaking and teamwork skills have significantly developed over the past year.
I have also grown a lot over the past year in terms of independent living and developing new perspectives. My social skills have improved by going to union events, joining societies and meeting different people which I believe is a very important skill for when you are joining the industry and for your personal life.
What would you say to students coming to do the same course?
The School of Food Science has excellent facilities; support with studies, laboratories and research. Be prepared to put in a lot of hard work, it’s not an easy course and it's always good to consider industrial placement opportunities after your second year.
I would also say, make most of the opportunity that you have been given. Leeds has so much to offer to students and you should constantly be trying different things and stepping out of your comfort zone. In terms of academics, make sure to get involved beyond your lectures in interesting projects that the university offers and make use of some of the best facilities like the careers centre.
