Why did you decide to study a masters at the University of Leeds?
The University of Leeds is a prestigious Russell Group University in a vibrant city and was named University of the Year 2017 by The Times and The Sunday Times’ Good University Guide. The specific course is highly regarded in the industry and offers a unique blend of modules. The programme is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Water and Environmental Management (CIWEM), which is a key reason behind why I chose to study this MSc. Leeds also offers work placement opportunities for many of its courses, an experience I was keen to take advantage of.
What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University so far and why?
The community, friendly and supportive atmosphere on the course and at the University of Leeds more widely has been a stand out factor. The fantastic facilities such as the libraries, students’ union and sports centre have added to the excellent University experience. Fieldtrips are always great aspects too.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed.
A highlight has been undertaking a work placement with Atkins which involved evaluating a GIS based tool designed to identify Natural Flood Management (NFM) opportunities. This was an invaluable experience where I had the chance to present my findings at the end of the placement, and as a result the team had some real actions to take forward to improve the tool. The course content has been stimulating and assignments have been applicable to the real-world environment. I am currently working on my Dissertation looking at the impact of an urban development on runoff and water quality, which is also benefitting the University Living Lab project.
What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?
Leeds has everything you could ever need as a student! Music, theatre, comedy, sport, shopping, and a wide range of bars and restaurants. Leeds is also in a fantastic location with easy access to the Yorkshire Dales and nearby towns and cities, perfect for exploring at the weekends.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I am starting a Graduate Scheme with AECOM in September working in their water team. I then hope to continue my career in this sector as a water or environmental consultant, specifically with a focus around flooding. I am also aiming to work towards becoming chartered through CIWEM.
What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?
Through studying this MSc at Leeds some key skills I have developed that will benefit my future career are problem solving, teamwork, and presentation skills, all of which are directly transferable to the workplace.
What would you say to students coming to do the same course?
Attend as many of the extra-curricular activites on offer for professional development as you can, such as departmental research cluster meetings, wider university events and lectures, library skills sessions, and CIWEM events.
