- Programme leader: MSc Sustainability in Transport
- Job title: The Masters programme in Sustainability in Transport provides knowledge and analytic skills to enable students to contribute to addressing some of the most pressing issues facing societies.
Prospects for sustainability depend on transport. That is because transport profoundly influences and is influenced by our environment, societies and economies. Moving to truly sustainable transport requires understanding these influences and recognising the complex political and social contexts in which change needs to occur.
My research focuses on mobility and transport’s relations with social and environmental sustainability and on the governance, politics and practices which shape transport. Transport, and especially sustainability in transport, is fundamentally interdisciplinary. This is reflected in my research which has involved work on many interdisciplinary research projects including carbon governance in transport policy; walking and cycling; sustainable urban mobility planning; and mobility justice in transitions to low carbon transport. My research has been used to inform policy and planning, to contribute to work of non-governmental organisations and in public engagement.
The Masters programme in Sustainability in Transport provides knowledge and analytic skills to enable students to contribute to addressing some of the most pressing issues facing societies. It is based in the Institute for Transport Studies and co-delivered with the School of Earth and Environment. The programme explores values of mobility across all aspects of our lives. It covers the practical understanding and tools required to assess impacts of transport systems on social justice, economic sustainability, carbon emissions, air quality and land use. Most importantly the programme enables students to investigate and develop possibilities for creating sustainable transport systems which provide mobility for all while minimising environmental impacts
