Transport and the triple injustice: The role of transport policy in tackling inequality and climate change during Covid-19 recovery
Presented by ITS Alumna Malithi Fernando, MSc Transport Planning 2019
Brief Abstract: Before the pandemic, the world was faced with the 'double injustice' of growing social and climate change inequalities. Transport was part of the problem, but can it also be part of the solution? In this presentation, we look at how cities can better align transport policies with environmental goals and wellbeing objectives during Covid-19 recovery. The presentation draws from Malithi's work at the International Transport Forum. It will also include a reflection of early career experiences and lessons learned in the private and intergovernmental sectors.
Biog: Malithi graduated with distinction from the University of Calgary with a BSc in Civil Engineering (minor in Transport Engineering). She then studied her masters in Transport Planning at ITS where her Dissertation was entitled: “The Role of Public Transport in Inducing Gentrification”. She is now a policy analyst/modeler at the International Transport Forum in the Quantitative Policy Analysis team, based in Paris. She manages the production of the next edition of the ITF’s flagship publication, the ITF Transport Outlook. Every two years it reports on trends and models future scenarios in the transport sector under varying policy agendas. Prior to this, her work involved developing strategic transport modelling tools for policymakers in Estonia to test the performance of transport policies. She also conducted a case study looking at the costs and benefits of using micro electric vehicles in postal delivery fleets in Korea
There will be a Q&A session at the end of the presentation and whilst this seminar is primarily focused at UG students, everyone is encouraged to participate.
