Winner of the 2026 Institute for Transport Studies Road Safety Prize announced

We're delighted to celebrate Adelia Kusuma Ayu, whose outstanding Road Safety coursework was awarded the highest mark in the class, earning her the ITS Road Safety Prize.

Adelia's work stood out for its clarity, innovation and real-world impact. Focusing on a junction in Headingley, she identified key road safety challenges, carried out behavioural observations, analysed pedestrian crossing times, and proposed evidence-based solutions to improve safety for all road users, while thoughtfully acknowledging the limitations of each recommendation. 
 
The ITS Road Safety Prize was established in 2025 through the generosity of Dr Ian greenwood, an Institute for Transport Studies alumnus, researcher, commentator and advocate for reducing death and injury on Britain's roads. The prize honours the memory of Dr Greenwood's daughter, Alice, who tragically lost her life in a road traffic collision. The prize recognises exceptional student work that has the potential to make our roads safer. 
 
Dr Greenwood shared his congratulations with Adelia, saying: 

I am so pleased you have produced such an outstanding report. I hope this prize helps to build on your career in whatever you choose to do next.
