Meet the researchers and students from Leeds who will attend this year's United Nations climate negotiations, COP29.
In November all eyes will turn to Baku, Azerbaijan, hosts of COP29.
People from around the world will gather to discuss and demand action on climate change. Hundreds of presidents and prime ministers will be joined by thousands of delegates to agree on a pathway for reaching the targets set out in the Paris Agreement of 2015.
Among those delegates will be several researchers and students from the University of Leeds. As an official observer of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, the University of Leeds is sending a delegation to attend COP29.They include Matthaeus Menezes Assef, Yuanyuan Dong, Jyoti Sudhakar Narsude, Rebecca Sarku, Sumedha Basu and Rosario Michel-Villarreal in the Faculty of Environment.
Members of the delegation will be involved in hosting and speaking at events as well as conducting research. They will also contribute to the accountability of the process and use the opportunity to meet with a wide range of key stakeholders.
This online event hosted by the Priestley Centre for Climate Futures offers the University of Leeds community an opportunity to meet members of their COP29 delegation.
As an introduction, we will offer an overview of COP29 and outline its importance: both scientific and political. You will then hear from several members of the delegation about their planned activities and hopes for the negotiations. Finally, you will have an opportunity to ask questions and share any messages that you would like to be taken to COP29.
