As a geography student, university has been an amazing experience. My favourite aspects have definitely been the annual residential field trips. From digging snow pits in Austria to travelling to the other side of the world for a field trip in New Zealand, the School of Geography has provided me with exciting and rewarding opportunities that have not only developed my enthusiasm for Geography, but also developed my self-confidence and adaptability to new environments.
The modules available to study encompass a wide variety of geographical themes that you can tailor your degree to study during your second and third year. Personally, I was interested in the dynamic landscape, therefore I chose any modules that included rivers or glaciers! I really enjoyed the Earth, Surface Processes module in second year, as the main reports were based on field trips, to the Lake District for example, which provided an exciting and memorable experience to ground an understanding of the topic. In third year, my favourite module was definitely the New Zealand module, as I was given the independence to conduct my own research on a topic which was entirely of interest to me. Within the School of Geography, the friendliness of the staff and lecturers have also contributed to my positive university experiences due to the ongoing support available from open door services and rapid email responses.
During my time at Leeds, I have readily accepted new opportunities. As a Committee Representative on ‘GeogSoc’, I organised a residential trip to Amsterdam for 42 Geography students. Not only was this trip a great success, but the associated skills I gained in persuading students to book onto the trip, have provided me with great selling points to discuss in interviews! During my second and third year, I worked at the University Union Supermarket. This part-time employment was a motivating break from studying and also enabled me to take part in projects and interview assessments that have again helped my C.V!
Leeds University Union is a fantastic social space. From gift shops to cafes to bars to night clubs, there are events and areas to suit every personality. The Union also offers an endless list of societies for students to join, which I have always made the most of! In my first year, I was a member of the University netball team and travelled with them to Spain on tour; in my second year, I joined the Surf Society and learned to surf in Newquay and during my final year, I joined the Modern Dance Society and performed in the University dance show!
Due to the vast array of opportunities available, I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Leeds and would recommend any one to choose to study BSc Geography at the University of Leeds. The city never fails to disappoint: from the vibrant nightlife to the cultural art galleries, there are plenty of hidden gems to discover during your undergraduate experience.
