Public Housing Regeneration under the Private Finance Initiative

The overall aim of our research is to critically analyse the use of the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) in public housing regeneration in England. We are particularly interested in understanding residents’ experiences, finding out how they feel about the changes to their homes, communities and environments, whether they welcome or oppose them, and their experience of the services provided. We also want to look at how neighbourhoods are physically restructured and what this might mean for both the provision of affordable housing and the social mix of people living there.

Key research questions:

  • Why is PFI being used in council housing regeneration?
  • How, why and for whose benefit is the built environment transformed?
  • What are the lived experiences of housing PFI schemes from the perspective of residents, tenants and leaseholders?

Findings

The following is a report about the results of a survey we supported residents on Myatts Field North to carry out, about tenant experiences of the council housing refurbishment works on their estate.
