What course are you studying?
I am studying MSc Nutrition, at the University of Leeds
Why did you decide to study a masters at the University of Leeds?
I studied psychology at undergraduate level and felt as though I wanted to have a career that involved nutrition. Leeds is second in the 2018 league tables for Food Science and is known as a great university, both for studying and the student experience, so Leeds seemed like the perfect choice.
What has been the best aspect of studying on your course and at the University so far and why?
Overall, I have loved the experience of being a student at Leeds. I’ve really enjoyed the course content and the lecturers are so friendly. As it is quite a small course, we have all gotten to know one another through group work and it’s been lovely being part of a nutrition community. The Nutrition course is very international, so it has been wonderful getting to know so many different people from different backgrounds. Also, the university puts lots of events on for postgrad’s such as a movie night, so it has been great fun trying out different things and getting to know more people.
Tell us about some of the exciting projects you have completed.
We have carried out a lot of group projects, we have been in the labs determining the polyphenol content of different teas, as well as investigating which factors may affect iron absorption. We have also been able to conduct a group project of our choice, my group decided to focus on the sugar tax which has been really interesting.
What does Leeds as a city have to offer students?
Leeds is a great city. There are so many good places to shop, so many independent cafes to have brunch and various markets offering street food and local goods. There is frequent and affordable public transport, making it easy to travel around Leeds. I can’t think of anything it is missing. Although it is a big city, it is full of students and feels really safe.
What are your ambitions for the future?
Once I have graduated from Leeds, I aspire to gain further experience in the field of nutrition, I then plan to complete a dietetics postgraduate degree to become a registered dietitian.
What experiences at Leeds do you think will help you in your future career?
The staff at Leeds do incredible work and have inspired me to make a difference, I think this will help to encourage me in the future to really try my best in areas that are important to me.
